You've got to get out of that hammock eventually...and we have great ways to spend your days-a big reason why so many people return to St. Croix year after year. When you aren't on the beach, in the water, or playing golf, consider our island's charms: ![]() Rainforest Tour the tropical Forest: Drive or ride horseback along winding roads that weave up the northwest coast and through our dense tropical forest, referred to locally as the "rainforest." Swim in the Monk's Bath tidal pools, visit a woodwork shop that makes crafts from local mahogany, or attend an occasional Sunday afternoon pig roast held at Mt. Victory Camp. Pause for a little liquid refreshment at the Mt. Pellier Hut Domino Club where (non-alcoholic) beer-drinking pigs wait to join you. See the Salt River Bay National Historical Park: : Head up to the hilltop visitor center for a wonderful view of the bay, now a National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve. The area below combines prehistoric and colonial sites and is the place where Christopher Columbus sent a landing party ashore in 1493 for an unexpected encounter with hostile natives. The best way to tour the park is via a kayak you can rent nearby, with or without a guide. ![]() Casino Gambling Casino Gambling: Place your bets at the only casino in the United States Virgin Islands, found on the east end of the island. The Divi Carina Bay Casino offers slot machines, blackjack, craps, roulette, and other games throughout the year schedules Texas Hold 'Em Poker tournaments periodically. There's a small eatery and a hopping bar which often has live entertainment for dancing. Shop for something special: : In both Christiansted and Frederiksted, Danish arches frame ground level sidewalks to shelter shoppers from sun and occasional rain showers. You'll find handmade locally-designed jewelry, tropical clothing and house wares, island arts and crafts, water sports gear, duty-free liquor, and much more. A number of art studios and galleries in both towns display original artwork and prints for sale. Most stores are open Monday through Saturday. ![]() Spa Treatment Sink into a spa: St. Croix resorts all have full service spa facilities open to the public and even the smallest bed and breakfast can arrange a soothing treatment in the location you prefer. What could be more decadent than a massage under palm trees by the sea? Sail off on a schooner: For a classic adventure in paradise, board the historic Roseway at Gallows Bay each weekday evening or in the daytime on weekends. More than 80 years old, she's a thing of beauty and a National Historic Landmark as America's last sailing pilot ship when she retired in 1973. The crew will even let you help when they raise the massive sails! Proceeds from sailing fees support educational programs aboard ship for local young people. ![]() Enjoy a day at the track Follow the ponies: Even with no experience, you can arrange for a horseback ride along the beach or through the rain forest. Or, if you'd rather watch than ride, across the road from the airport, you'll find the Randall "Doc" James Racetrack seating 8,000 people where scheduled horseracing is held especially around holidays. Place a wager at Off Track Betting terminals year round, and enjoy the bar and restaurant. ![]() Sunset Jazz Get into the grove: Whether it's reggae or salsa, steel pans or soca, or St. Croix's own "scratch" Quelbe, we've got the music. Locals love Sunset Jazz, a free concert on the third Friday of each month on the Frederiksted waterfront. Resort hotels, the casino, and some restaurants present free, live entertainment evenings and at brunch. Whim Museum offers classical candlelight concerts and the Island Center presents calypso shows and other performances. Annual jazz, Latin, and blues events take place year-round, and MTV's Tempo Channel, dedicated to Caribbean music, loves to host live events on St. Croix in November. |
