Family Friendly Things to Do

This is one vacation where your kids won't spend all day in a dark arcade playing computer games—there's just too much happening outdoors on St. Croix. "Pirates of the Caribbean" will come alive when when they sail on board the historic schooner Roseway and help handle the lines. They can scramble up to the ramparts of an 18th century forts that once guarded against marauders and absorb a painless dose of history while kayaking at Salt River Bay where Columbus arrived in 1493.

Snorkeling at Buck Island

Buck Island Snorkeling

Most families put a boat trip to Buck Island Reef National Monument at the top of their "to do" list on arrival. Even young children quickly pick up the idea of snorkeling at a lesson in the shallow waters of Turtle Beach, and boat operators have fins and masks to fit almost anyone. Identifying tropical fish or spotting endangered sea turtles along the underwater trail can develop new interests for a lifetime. Full and half day tours are available and include a snorkeling lesson, lifejacket, snorkel gear, and a guide through the underwater trail.

Explore a sugar mill

Explore the island together by jeep, open air safari van, or air-conditioned rental car. You can drive to the easternmost point of the United States, Point Udall, and makes guesses en route about whether someone actually lives in the hilltop castle (yes) or whether the giant radio telescope is contacting aliens (no). .

Head west through the rain forest where even the most jaded teenager will laugh out loud when one of the Mt. Pellier Hut Domino Club's famous pigs leaps up in his stall to quench his thirst. Or explore the old fashioned way— even with no past experience, children (age 5 or older) and teens can ride horseback through the rainforest up scenic ridges and down to the beach, seeing old plantation ruins along the way.

Crab races

Crab Racing

At sunset, take them to crab races where they can pick out potential winners, or play miniature golf. There's a landscaped, 18-hole mini course at the Divi Carina Bay Resort open to the public.

When it's time for dinner, you'll find foods kids will happily eat at just about any island restaurant. But don't be surprised if they develop tastes for key lime pie or more exotic items like roti, a bread wrap containing curried chicken, meat or vegetables.

Beach Fun

For leisurely, unplanned days when you just want to soak up the sun, you know where to head. What kid doesn't love a pool or the beach? On our beautiful white sands, kids can be kids—run, swim, ride a boogie board, or build a sand castle for hours on end. They can watch our green lizards hop, keep an eye out for iguanas, or stare at frigate birds circling the sky.

Many St. Croix accommodations are tailor-made for family vacations with large rooms or separate, connecting spaces where the kids can spread out yet still be close at hand. Some hotels offer "kids stay free" plans when children are sharing parents' rooms.
