Sports on St. Croix

With year-round sunshine and balmy temperatures, St. Croix is an ideal setting for energetic pursuits. At most any level of experience, you can join local and international athletes who come here to train and to compete in a bevy of sporting events throughout the year. Check our calendar and reserve flights and hotels early for specific events—or come down any time of year to train outdoors.

Buck to Bucc Swim

Coral Reef Swim

The first Sunday in May each year, the world's top competitors take on the Ironman 70.3TM triathlon by completing a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike course, and 13.1 mile run. It adds up to a beautiful, 70.3 mile challenge best known for "The Beast," a steep grade that cyclists must ascend. To watch the start and finish, stay in one of the hotels in downtown Christiansted—island roads are partially blocked while the event is underway—or find a shady spot along the course and cheer the athletes as they pass.

To sample a shorter course in November, you can join international athletes who compete in the Caribbean Classic Triathlon, an Olympic-distance triathlon consisting of a 1500 meter swim, 40K bike and 10K run.

The Coral Reef Swim Race held each October is nick-named the "Buck to Bucc" since the five mile course takes swimmers at dawn from the east beach at Buck Island Reef National Monument to The Buccaneer resort's Mermaid beach. Proceeds benefit the Nature Conservancy's program to protect coral reefs. Swimmers of all ages are welcomed at the event which has drawn competitors from as fary away as Europe and Japan.

Triathle During Competition

Runners can take part all year round in foot races of varying lengths sponsored by a number of different organizations—there's a fort to fort race from Frederiksted to Christiansted, or vice versa, races on many major holidays for adults and kids, and The Women Race, a two mile run-walk for women and girls sponsored each June by the Women's Coalition, an organization that fights domestic violence. The 26.2 St. Croix International Marathon, first marathon to take place in the new millennium, traditionally is the first marathon in the world each January 1.

Fitness Centers: St. Croix resorts typically have fitness rooms for guests with weights, steppers, cardio machines, and other workout gear. Ask your hotelier about arranging a guest pass at a local fitness center.
